How to make sweet and sour Korean tteokbokki ( 치킨양념맛 떡볶이)

Sweet and sour Korean Tteokbokki

Annyeonghaseyo! Hello, K Friends! Hope you are doing well!

Sometimes we drive unconsciously and consequently take a wrong exit, arriving at a different destination. However, there we may find a brand-new shopping mall or an unexpected surprise. This kind of thing can be seen in cooking as well. Well, last week I had some spicy sauce left, and I didn’t want to throw it away. I opened my refrigerator and found some Korean rice cakes. I decided to just stir-fry the rice cakes and mix them with the spicy sauce. Guess what? It tasted pretty good, and so I decided to introduce this on my channel. So, today’s cuisine is “Yangnyeom Tteokbokki, Seasoned Tteokbokki (치킨양념맛 떡볶이)”. Let’s make it together!

How To Make It

Ingredients: 1lb. rice cake, 2 scallions

Sauce: 2T soy sauce, 1T sugar, 3T honey, 2T ketchup, 1T red pepper paste, 1/2T minced garlic, a bit of pepper, 3T water

Step 1: Making Sauce

Slice 2 pieces of green onions.

Put 2 tablespoons of soy sauce. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar. If you have honey or corn syrup, add 3 tablespoons. Add 1 tablespoon of red pepper paste. Add 2 tablespoons of ketchup. Add half a tablespoon of minced garlic. Add about two pinches of ground pepper. Add a bit of green onions. Add 3 tablespoons of water into the bowl. Mix the sauce well.

Step 2: Grilling rice cakes

You can get rice cakes in Korean marts. If you're lucky, you can buy a soft fresh rice cake. Or you can buy the packaged rice cake. When using packaged tteokbokki rice cakes, blanch them in boiling water for about 2 minutes before cooking because it’s a bit hard.

The rice cake I'm going to use is the rice cake made today so it’s soft. You don’t need to boil it. Cut the rice cake into bite-size pieces.

And then tear it apart one by one.

First of all, I'm going to stir-fry the rice cakes in a pan. Add 2 tablespoons of cooking oil to the preheated pan. Put the rice cakes.

Cook it over medium high heat for about 5 minutes to make it crispy. Please put the well-cooked rice cake on a plate.

Step 3: Boil the sauce

Pour the sauce into the preheated pan and boil down the sauce for about 2 mins.

When the sauce is boiled down to a certain extent, add the cooked rice cake.

Mix the rice cakes with sauce so that they are well seasoned. Cook it for couple of mins. Place it in a bowl. Sprinkle a bit of sesame seeds. Sprinkle a bit of green onions. A very delicious Yangnyeom tteogbokki is done!

The taste of the Yangnyeom tteogbokkI is pretty close to the Yangnyeom chicken (Spicy fried chicken). But, it is very different from a typical tteogbokkI. So, just try to make it when you get a chance! It's really delicious! Hope you enjoyed my choice today! Have a great day! See you next time! Gamsahapnida!

Note

  • If you deep fry rice cakes in oil, the rice cakes might explode, so don't fry them in oil and stir-fry them in a pan. In fact, I experienced a sudden explosion of rice cake while frying it once in oil, and I decided not to deep- fry rice cakes from now on.
