Perfect Rice in an Instant Pot
I usually make rice in a
Korean rice cooker, so I wasn’t sure what to expect when I tried making it in
my Instant Pot. I was pleasantly surprised, the rice came out fluffy and nicely
cooked. This is a simple method to know if you already have an Instant Pot at
home. The key is keeping the rice-to-water ratio simple and giving the rice a
little time to rest after pressure cooking.
Ingredients
- 2 cups white rice
- 2 cups water
- 1 tbsp olive oil, optional
Why a 1:1 Rice-to-Water
Ratio Works
For this Instant Pot method,
I use 2 cups rice and 2 cups water, or a simple 1:1 ratio. Because the Instant
Pot is sealed during pressure cooking, very little moisture escapes while the
rice cooks.
I also add 1 tablespoon olive oil. This is optional, but I find that it gives the rice a little shine and helps reduce sticking.

How to Cook Rice in an Instant Pot
1. Rinse the rice: Rinse 2
cups white rice a few times and drain well. Add the rinsed rice to the Instant
Pot.
2. Add the water and olive
oil: Pour 2 cups water over the rice. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil, if using.
3. Set the Instant Pot: Close the lid and set the steam release switch to the symbol that keeps the steam in. Press the Rice button and cook for 12 minutes.
4. Let the Instant Pot build pressure: At first, you may see “Auto” on the display instead of the 12-minute countdown. This is normal. The Instant Pot needs time to heat up and build pressure before the cooking time begins. With mine, this takes about 10 minutes. Once the pot reaches pressure, the silver float valve rises and the 12-minute countdown begins shortly afterward.
5. Let the pressure release
naturally: When the 12 minutes are finished, don’t release the pressure right
away. Leave the Instant Pot alone for about 10 minutes for a natural pressure
release. This also gives the rice time to rest. If the float valve is still up
after 10 minutes, carefully release the remaining steam. Wait until the float
valve has completely dropped before opening the lid.
6. Fluff the rice: Open the lid and gently fluff the rice with a rice paddle to separate the grains. That’s it! Simple, fluffy rice made right in the Instant Pot.
Helpful Tips
- Don’t worry when the timer doesn’t start immediately. The Instant Pot has to build pressure first, so the total cooking time will be longer than 12 minutes.
- Give the rice the full 10-minute natural release. There’s no need to release the pressure as soon as the cooking cycle ends.
- The olive oil is optional. You can leave it out if you prefer.
- Instant Pot models can look different. The buttons, display, and steam release switch on your model may not look exactly like mine, so use the video for visual guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much water do I need for
2 cups of rice in the Instant Pot?
- For this method, I use 2 cups water for 2 cups rice, a 1:1 ratio.
How long do I Pressure Cook
the rice?
- I use the Rice setting for 12 minutes, followed by about 10 minutes of natural pressure release.
Why doesn't the 12-minute timer start right away?
- The Instant Pot needs to heat up and build pressure before the cooking countdown starts. Mine takes about 10 minutes to reach pressure.
If you already have an
Instant Pot, this is an easy way to make rice without needing a separate rice
cooker. Once you know the basic ratio and timing, the process is very simple.
I hope this makes it a
