5-Minute Korean Egg Rice (Ganjang Gyeran Bap)

 5-Minute Korean Egg Rice

When I need something quick and comforting, this Korean egg rice is one of the easiest meals to make. Ganjang gyeran bap is a simple Korean home-style meal made with warm rice, fried eggs, soy sauce, and sesame oil. It uses everyday ingredients and comes together in about 5 minutes, which makes it especially nice for a busy morning or a quick meal.

I like to cook the egg whites all the way through while keeping the yolks a little runny. Once everything is mixed into the warm rice, the yolks, soy sauce, and sesame oil make the rice rich and savory.

What Is Ganjang Gyeran Bap?

Ganjang means soy sauce, gyeran means egg, and bap means rice.

It’s a very simple Korean home meal rather than a dish with one strict recipe. Different families make it a little differently, but rice, eggs, soy sauce, and sesame oil are a classic combination.

My version uses two fried eggs with slightly runny yolks. I spoon a little hot oil over the whites so they cook through without having to overcook the yolks.

Ingredients

MAIN INGREDIENTS

  • 1 bowl warm cooked rice
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • ½ tbsp sesame oil
  • A few sesame seeds

Ingredient Notes

Soy Sauce

  • Start with less soy sauce if you prefer a lighter flavor. After mixing everything together, you can taste the rice and add more if needed.

Sesame Oil

  • A little sesame oil adds the familiar nutty flavor that makes this simple egg rice especially comforting.

How to Make Korean Egg Rice

1. Fry the eggs: Heat a pan over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon cooking oil. Add 2 eggs, then reduce the heat to medium-low. I like the whites completely cooked while keeping the yolks a little runny. To help the whites cook without overcooking the yolks, spoon a little of the hot oil over the whites, avoiding the yolks as much as possible.

2. Add the rice: Place 1 bowl of warm cooked rice in a serving bowl. Warm rice works especially well because it helps the egg and sesame oil mix into the rice more easily.

3. Add the eggs and seasonings: Place the 2 fried eggs over the warm rice. Add 1 tablespoon soy sauce and ½ tablespoon sesame oil. Sprinkle with a few sesame seeds.

4. Break the yolks and mix: Break the yolks and mix everything together really well. Korean egg rice tastes best when the egg, soy sauce, and sesame oil are evenly mixed throughout the warm rice. That’s it. A simple bowl of Korean egg rice is ready in about 5 minutes.

Tips for the Best Korean Egg Rice

  • Keep the heat at medium-low after adding the eggs. This makes it easier to cook the whites while keeping the yolks a little runny.
  • Use warm rice rather than cold rice. The warm rice helps everything mix together more smoothly.
  • Start with less soy sauce if you’re unsure how salty you want it. Mix first, taste, and then add more if needed.

What to Serve with Korean Egg Rice

  • I especially like this with kimchi. The tangy, spicy kimchi goes really well with the rich egg and sesame oil.
  • Another simple way to eat it is to wrap a little egg rice and kimchi in roasted seaweed. It’s one of those combinations that’s simple but so good.
