Crispy Tofu Rice Paper Bites

Crispy Tofu Rice Paper Bites

These crispy tofu rice paper bites are an easy way to turn a simple block of tofu into something a little different. The outside gets golden and crispy in the air fryer, while the tofu filling stays soft and savory.

This isn’t a traditional Korean dish. It’s a simple variation inspired by Korean flavors, with tofu seasoned with soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, and green onions, then wrapped in rice paper and air-fried until crisp.

The sweet and tangy soy dipping sauce is simple, but it goes especially well with the mild tofu filling.

Ingredients

Tofu Filling

  • 1 lb (450 g) firm or extra-firm tofu
  • 5 rice paper wrappers
  • ½ carrot
  • 2 green onions
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • ⅓ tsp salt
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp potato starch
  • Oil spray, as needed

Soy Dipping Sauce

  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp water
  • ½ tbsp vinegar
  • 1 tsp sugar

Ingredient Notes

  • Firm or extra-firm tofu: Either works well for this recipe. The important part is removing as much moisture as possible before making the filling.
  • Potato starch: This helps the tofu mixture hold together inside the rice paper.
  • Rice paper: Dip it very briefly in cold water. It may still feel firm when you take it out, but it will continue to soften while you add the filling.

How to Make Crispy Tofu Rice Paper Bites

1. Prepare the tofu: Drain 1 lb (450 g) firm or extra-firm tofu and remove as much moisture as possible. Getting the tofu fairly dry helps the rice paper become crispier in the air fryer.

2. Prepare the vegetables: Thinly slice and finely chop ½ carrot. Finely chop 2 green onions. Add the carrot, green onions, and drained tofu to a bowl.

3. Season the tofu filling: Add ⅓ teaspoon salt, black pepper to taste, 1 teaspoon minced garlic, 1 teaspoon soy sauce, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, and ½ teaspoon sugar. Add 1 tablespoon potato starch and mix everything together well. The potato starch helps the filling hold together.

4. Fill the rice paper: Briefly dip 1 rice paper wrapper in cold water. Don't wait for it to become completely soft in the water. It will naturally soften as you work. Place about 2 heaping tablespoons of tofu filling onto the rice paper and gently roll it up. Press the ends together gently to help keep the filling inside. Repeat with the remaining wrappers. You should have 5 rolls in total.

5. Cut and air fry: Cut each roll into bite-sized pieces using a knife or kitchen scissors. Arrange the pieces on the air fryer tray with a little space between them. Lightly spray the outside with oil as needed. If you don't have oil spray, lightly brush them with oil instead. Air fry in a preheated air fryer at 390°F (200°C) for about 20 minutes, flipping once halfway through.

Air fryers can cook differently, so keep an eye on the tofu bites during the last few minutes. They're ready when the outside is golden and crispy.

Make the Soy Dipping Sauce

While the tofu bites are cooking, combine 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 tablespoon water, ½ tablespoon vinegar, and 1 teaspoon sugar. Mix until the sugar is dissolved. The sweet and tangy sauce is a nice contrast to the mild, savory tofu filling.

Tips for the Best Crispy Tofu Bites

  • Remove as much moisture as possible from the tofu. Too much moisture can make it harder for the rice paper to crisp.
  • Don't over-soak the rice paper. A very quick dip in cold water is enough. It will continue softening while you fill and roll it.
  • Leave a little space between the pieces. This helps the hot air circulate around them as they cook.
  • Watch them near the end. Air fryers vary, so use the 20-minute cooking time as a guide and cook until the rice paper looks golden and crispy.

FAQ

Why is my rice paper too soft to roll?

  • It may have been left in the water too long. Briefly dip it in cold water and take it out while it still feels slightly firm. It will continue to soften as you add the filling.

Why should I remove the moisture from the tofu?

  • Drier tofu helps the rice paper crisp up better and also keeps excess moisture out of the filling.

Can I use extra-firm tofu?

  • Yes. Firm or extra-firm tofu both work for this recipe.

What temperature should I use in the air fryer?

  • Preheat the air fryer and cook the tofu bites at 390°F (200°C) for about 20 minutes, flipping them once halfway through. Check them during the last few minutes since air fryers can vary.

Can I use oil if I don't have oil spray?

  • Yes. Lightly brush the outside of the rice paper with oil instead.

If you have tofu and rice paper at home, this is a fun and simple way to use them together. I especially love the contrast between the crispy rice paper outside and the soft, savory tofu filling inside.

Serve them with the sweet and tangy soy dipping sauce and enjoy them while they're nice and crispy.
